I believe in the power of one.

A commonly misquoted Bible verse is found in Matthew 25.  It is often times said like this, “And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.'” It should be like this, “And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to me.'”  The word “one” seems small and insignificant– but there is power in just one.

I experience the power of one every day.

It all started several years ago when God called my family to adopt a child of color. Most everyone, including a social worker, some church members, and even some of my extended family, were against us adopting a child of color mainly because of fear and many of them were raised in a very prejudice environment.  There were already four of us kids, and most people thought adding more children to our big family was crazy.  Nevertheless, we went against most everyone’s counsel, and chose to listen to the Voice of Truth rather than the voice of man, and adopted a sweet little girl named Grace from Haiti.

We have been an interracial family for four and a half years, and during that time I have witnessed every single one of my family members who were against us adopting Grace, drastically have a change of heart.  Because of our example, more people than I could have ever imagined have been influenced to adopt.  Also, my parents started an orphan ministry that partners with Children’s Hope Chest which daily feeds about 300 orphans at different carepoints in Swaziland, Africa–the same area our team will be working in this summer.

Two years ago God led us to adopt Daniel.  He is from Liberia, Africa, and now we are in the process to adopt again from Liberia.  Once again, we’re going against the “norm” and following God instead of man.

I know the power of one, I live it and witness it every day in my family.
